Unique Dragon Bakshaish Rug. 94 x 111 in.

This Bakshaish rug, circa 1890, exemplifies the bold design language and powerful geometry characteristic of carpets woven in the Bakshaish region of northwest Persia. The composition is dominated by a striking stepped medallion set against a saturated red field, surrounded by highly stylized tribal motifs, angular botanical forms, and symbolic elements that reflect the village weaving traditions of the Heriz district. The deep indigo blues and terracotta reds—derived from natural dyes—create a strong visual contrast typical of late 19th-century Bakshaish production. It features unusual dragon motifs in salmon pink at the caps of the central medallion.
